Skin care during pregnancy

Skin care during pregnancy

Hormonal changes that take place during the pregnancy are a normal occurrence, and it is common for a woman’s skin to change during this process. For this reason, it is recommended to use personal care products formulated with raw materials that can offer protection against these changes.

In addition to being related to hormones, these changes also have a physiological, anatomic and mechanical cause.

Moisturizing the skin as the main care method during pregnancy is one of the most common pieces of advice given by specialists.

Highly moisturizing creams can help ease the stress that the skin will be subject to during these months due to stretching. In addition, due to the action of hormones, the skin feels dryer, and using an emollient and moisturizing cream becomes even more necessary.

In this case, it is preferable to use non-comedogenic emollients and moisturizers that are as inert as possible and suitable for sensitive skins, since it is also common for the skin to be more reactive during this process. Natural oils, silicones, esters and glycerin are good options among ingredients that meet these requirements.

When it comes to the active ingredients, there are a number of options –mainly natural– that can be added to boost the moisturizing effect, such as Trehalose, and the skin’s ability to stretch through the stimulation of collagen and elastin production with Centella Asiatica and other natural extracts.

The constant use of sunscreens is recommended for facial daily care. This is because the skin of a pregnant woman is more prone to developing liver spots due to the action of melanocyte-stimulating hormones. The sunscreen helps reduce the intensity of the spots, which usually disappear after the pregnancy.

Sunscreens from mineral sources –TiO2 and ZnO– are recommended because they act by reflecting the rays rather than absorbing them.

All the cosmetic care methods that a pregnant woman intends to use must be recommended by a dermatologist and combined with good eating habits.
